It seems that I am getting a lot of requests to provide career advice these days. I did formal career coaching for a few people in recent months and am currently participating as a mentor in the Boston Young Healthcare Professionals (BYHP) mentor program. In all these situations, I point people to my many previous blog posts on career advice to supplement what we discuss.

In this new virtual world of recruiting, I tell people not to underestimate the power of LinkedIn. It is an online professional directory that recruiters look to for candidates. Optimize your profile. Ensure the one liner under your name is a good description of your role since that is what people see when you invite them to connect with you and when you are found on searches. Use the about section to describe what you offer and how you can add value – don’t just copy and paste your current job description summary. Be active which shows you are current and engaged – that means sharing content yourself and commenting on other people’s posts. And if you are actively looking for a new job, check the “open to work” box – don’t worry, you can control who sees it.

Looking for a new job can be exciting and hard at the same time. Hopefully, the lessons and tips in these posts will make it a little easier.

Career advice in a competitive market

I seem to be getting an increasing number of requests for career advice calls these days. Of course, I make time to talk to people I know and try to be as helpful as I can. No question that there are a lot of good and talented people looking for a new opportunity these days for various reasons.

Here is my current baseline advice when I have these calls:

Criteria: You need to establish your criteria such as type of organization, type of role, title/level, culture, salary, and location. This may sound too basic, but it is critical. Not all criteria are equal so apply a relative weight to each. Once you have this framework, you can evaluate each option against your criteria and stay true to them. You don’t want to compromise and then regret your decision in 6 months.

Market trends: Do your research. What are the new and emerging roles/titles? How does your experience align with them? Do you need to reinvent yourself or develop new skills/knowledge to get a new role?

Search firms: Develop and maintain relationships with a few search firms and recruiters. They need to know who you are, what you are looking for, and what you offer compared to other candidates. They can also be helpful and honest about the market and how you compare to others in search. But remember, you own your career and your next move. Continue reading

5 job search challenges in 2020

One thing that hasn’t seemed to change during this pandemic is the number of health IT leaders making moves. Since we provide interim management services at StarBridge Advisors, I track these moves closely. I’m currently helping a number of colleagues find new opportunities and having conversations about what it takes to make their job search successful.

I have written many posts focused on career management over the years. Much of that advice remains the same. But in this new environment there are also new challenges:

Updating your resume and telling your story – It is always wise to consider professional resume writing help or at a minimum ask a trusted colleague to review and give you feedback. Ensure your most recent work experience is updated and focuses on outcomes and results. And regardless of why you are looking, be ready to tell your story succinctly and consistently. It is your story and you need to tell it. This is even more important if you are in between jobs for whatever reason.

Competition – It appears to be a “buyer’s” market with many talented people looking for new opportunities. Whether you have decided it is just time for a change or you were let go due to a merger or layoff, you are in a very competitive market. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. It’s best to pursue several opportunities at a time. But be ready for disappointment. Only one person gets the job in the end. Don’t get discouraged. Learn from each situation and prepare for the next. My post, “So you didn’t get the job”, has some advice you might want to check out. Now is a good time to work your network, let colleagues know what you are looking for and nurture your relationship with search firms. And if you learn about a position that’s not right for you, let others you know in search who might be better suited for it.

Preparing for virtual interviews – It’s very possible that all interview rounds will be virtual, and you will never meet people in person until you start the new position if not well after you start. Continue reading

Starting a new job or client project in a virtual world

If you are starting a new job or a new client engagement during this pandemic, you are most likely missing (and even craving) the in-person contacts that you are used to. The job interviews and onboarding may have been all virtual and the actual work may still be all virtual. For a new client engagement, you may be doing not just the kickoff meeting but all the subsequent work virtually. And this virtual mode may be the situation for the foreseeable future.

Neither of these scenarios is the same as a team or group of people who already know each other well and have formed good working relationships to suddenly be working virtually.

Given our work is often all about the relationships, what are some of the challenges of this new way of working with clients or starting a new job? And how best to address them? Some lessons and tips from my latest client engagement experience:

Culture – We have all heard the phrase “culture eats strategy for lunch”. You must work that much harder to understand the culture of an organization when you are not spending time together in person. Early on, find out what the norms and values of the organization are from your key contacts. Observe and listen. And don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Politics – Every organization has its politics. Best to stay out of them if you can. But you need to be aware of the politics and how best to navigate to get results. The politics may be less evident (a good thing) in the virtual world but are still there.

Who’s who – If you are used to getting to know your new colleagues or clients more informally to build a good, trusting working relationship, then this is all new. Continue reading

New year, new job?

No, this is not an announcement about me. This is a question for you – are you considering making a job change this year? If so, be sure to approach it with an objective and analytical view. Don’t just react to something and make a leap. Be sure you know why you’re leaving where you are and what you want next that you can’t get by staying.

In my blog post “Time for a job change?” I posed a series of questions to ask yourself when considering a job change and provided some pointers on starting the process. I closed that post with the reminder that you own your own career and to always be open to the possibilities. But remember, those possibilities might be in the organization that you are in.

In terms of managing your career, “Taking control of your life” is another post worth checking out. Don’t get caught in the “grass is greener” trap. If you do decide to make a move, make sure it’s an organization that you can commit to, that you are doing work you are passionate about, and that you have shared values with your colleagues.

If you are frustrated and restless at work, making a move is not always the answer. Talk with your boss about what the dissatisfiers are and propose changes to improve the situation. Make sure your boss knows both your short and long term professional career goals.

And if you manage people, consider the concept of a “stay interview”. An informal stay interview can help leaders find out what’s important to each of their staff. You can ask questions such as:

  • What makes you feel valued at work?
  • What would make your job more satisfying?
  • What can I do more of or less of as your manager?
  • What might tempt you to leave your current position?

Stay interviews are a good way to regularly check in and stay connected to your staff throughout the year. What you learn may give you an opportunity to make some adjustments. After all, hiring the right people is one of the most important jobs of management and retaining and growing them comes next.

Finding your passion

One piece of advice I give young people is that they don’t have to decide what they want to do for the rest of their life at age 22. Just think of all the jobs that didn’t exist 10 years ago and what might exist 10 yearscanstockphoto19577734 (1) finding passion from now.

As we acknowledge the nurses among us for National Nurses Week, think how much the nursing field has changed over the years and how many opportunities and different paths nurses can take these days. There is a growing need for nurses with informatics training but that is just one possible path among many.

My oldest daughter is a nurse practitioner. But she didn’t start there when she went to college. She got her undergraduate degree in hotel and restaurant management with a minor in business. She wanted to do travel and tourism – and see the world. On graduation day she looked at me and said, “Mom, I don’t know what I’m going to do with my life that’s meaningful, but I don’t think it’s travel and tourism”. I looked at her and said, “Just get a job and then figure it out”. That was the response of a parent having just put their oldest of two children through college and anxious for her to get started in the full-time work world. Can all you parents of young adults relate? Or did I sound like a callous and unsupportive parent?

She floundered for a year or two after college with a couple different jobs including work in the travel industry for a short time. But she started thinking early on after graduation about becoming a nurse. Whenever she talked to me about it, I told her she’d be a great nurse – super organized, able to multi-task better than anyone I knew, with fabulous people skills. But I also told her that she’d have to buckle down and study the sciences if she wanted to be a nurse.

She considered her options and decided to pursue a combined nursing / nurse practitioner program getting her second bachelor’s degree then her masters. She had found her passion! Continue reading

What’s YOUR personal brand?

We all have a professional network, big or small. It may be people we know well and have worked with at some point. Or people we’ve met briefly at a conference and agreed to keep in touch. Or people who canstockphoto18694235 (1) personal brandhave reached out to us to connect on social media channels after seeing our profiles.

While you may not think you have a “personal brand”, you do have a professional reputation.  The idea of having a personal brand may have invoked thoughts of vanity in the past. But not in this technology enabled social media world we live in.

So, what is your personal brand? Are you consciously creating it? How do people see you publicly online and in person? What are you known for? These are all questions you should be able to answer.

One of the first ways I thought about it was when I re-initiated my Twitter account several years ago and had to write my profile. At the time, my account was private. A colleague who was advising me on social media told me that was my first mistake. Twitter is meant to be public – I shouldn’t have to approve who can follow me. More importantly, he said my profile should capture in just a few phrases who I am and what’s important to me.

I recently saw a blog post by Janet Mesh from one of our partner firms, Healthcare IT Leaders, titled “How To Boost Your Career With An Online, Personal Brand”. I was reading along thinking, yup, yup I do all that. Then I was pleasantly surprised and grateful to see that I was used as an example. Negotiation is an everyday skill

When we think of needing good negotiation skills, we often think in terms of salary and promotions. For sales people and buyers, it’s negotiating terms and price. But if you really think about it, you are probably canstockphoto16049179 (1) negotiatenegotiating with someone about something every day.

Let’s look at some different situations.

Negotiating as an employee – This is certainly not an everyday event. You may be negotiating salary as part of a new job offer or a promotion with your current boss. Keep in mind that you can negotiate more than just the salary and any potential bonus. Most companies have a standard set of non-negotiable benefits that the HR representative explains. But there are other components you can negotiate before accepting an offer. One example may be a remote work option or relocation benefits. Consider the “value” of other benefits beyond the base salary as you negotiate. The key to success is to do your research on what might be possible, be ready with your ask, and be clear on what you’re willing to compromise on.

Negotiating as a buyer – This is not an everyday event either. You may be negotiating with a vendor for a product or service. Or you may be buying a new house or car. There may be some situations where there is no room for negotiation but it’s more likely that you be able to. Again, it’s not just the core price but other terms as well. The key to success will sound familiar – do your research, be ready with the ask, and be willing to compromise.

Make career choices right for you

One of the highlights of my week was participating in an American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) panel series with several Boston area healthcare leaders. The panel was part of a series focused canstockphoto13994976 (1) careeron early careerists and co-sponsored by the Boston Young Healthcare Professionals (BYHP). The panel was titled “Making the Next Move: Career Positioning and Proactively Managing Your Career Development”.

We covered a range of topics – taking ownership of your own career, knowing yourself and clarifying your roadmap, the work-life balancing act, gender and cultural diversity, personal branding and using social media, and generational differences.

Ted Witherell, Director of Organization Development and Learning Services, at Partners Healthcare was one of the other panelists. He posed three key questions when thinking about your career:

  • What brings you joy?
  • Are you good at it?
  • Does the world need you to do it?

These questions seemed to resonate with the audience. They came up often during the Q&A period as attendees sought to connect the experiences and advice being shared by the panelists with their own situations.

As the only woman on the five-member panel, I wanted to make sure I spoke directly to the women in the audience on challenges women face. At times, one of those challenges is having self-confidence. I encouraged everyone to check out the excellent article from a few years ago, “The Confidence Gap” by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman published in The Atlantic. I highly recommend reading it to understand that “success correlates just as closely with confidence as it does with competence” and “that with work, confidence can be acquired”.

When to use a career coach

Are you considering a major career change? Are you considering re-tooling and moving in a new direction? Are you trying to figure out if you should “stay or go”? Are you looking at one more big move canstockphoto7379432 (1) careerbefore you retire?

You may be asking yourself some of these questions. You may be turning to family, friends and colleagues for advice and perspective. Or you may be keeping it quiet and trying to figure it out by yourself. Or as unhappy and restless as you may be, you think there are too many barriers to making a change.

You may need encouragement and inspiration. Or you may need help building your confidence to make a change.

I have coached many people over the past several years. Some of them have been focused career coaching engagements. What does this look like?

We start with a bio like any other coaching engagement. I ask you to write a 1-2 page story of what makes you who you are, not the professional bio with a headshot. It is a time to reflect and get in touch with yourself.

We discuss your short-term and long-term career goals. If you have formulated some already, they may need refinement and a reality check.

We look at the range of options you are considering or could consider.

We figure out a framework for evaluating your options and consider the pros and cons of different paths.

We figure out what path makes the most sense and develop a plan to achieve it.

If you are in the middle of a job search, help with your resume and social media profile, interview prep or tips on networking may also be needed.

Sound simple? Maybe. But when you can’t settle on an answer to the “what should I do with the rest of my life” or “what should my next move be”, some outside professional help may be needed.

With a focused 3-month engagement, you will have a better sense of who you are, how you got to where you are, where you want to be, and a plan for how to get there. But be ready to do some deep reflection and hard work.
